Digital nomad visa for Spain 2026: a step-by-step guide from the experts in Barcelona

Based on Polenova & Partners’ practice for the first quarter of 2026: we see increased scrutiny of insurance policies and detailed auditing of employment contracts by UGE (Unidad de Grandes Empresas). In this guide, only the current requirements for today.

What’s different in 2026?

The Spanish Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) remains the fastest way to obtain residency for 3 years. The main update for 2026 is the automation of income verification through the social security system and new “remote” seniority requirements.

Financial Requirements (SMI 2026)

To be approved, your income (before taxes) must be:

  • Applicant: from 2,640 € per month (200% of the current SMI).
  • Family (2 persons): + 990 € (75% SMI).
  • Children: + 330 € each (25% SMI)

5 steps to getting a visa in Barcelona

1. Contract preparation

Your company must have been in existence for more than 1 year and you must have been working there for at least 3 months.

Tip from Polenova & Partners: In 2026, UGE often asks for a letter from the employer stating explicitly: “We authorize to work remotely specifically from Spain”. We help you draft wording that will not raise questions from officials.

2. Certificate of no criminal record (Apostille)

The certificate is valid for 6 months. It must be translated by Traducción Jurada (sworn translator).

3. health insurance

This is a “stumbling block” for many. Insurance is a must:

  • No surcharges (Sin Copagos).
  • No waiting periods (Sin Carencias).
  • From a Spanish company (Sanitas, Adeslas, etc.).

4. Filing documents (Online vs Consulate)

Filing inside Spain (from Barcelona) gives you a card for 3 years. Filing through a consulate gives you a visa for 1 year.

5. Registration in Seguridad Social

Once approved, you have 30 days to enroll in Social Security. This is a critical step for maintaining residency in the future.

Taxes: How to pay 24% instead of 45% (H2)

Thanks to Ley Beckham (Beckham’s Law), digital nomads in Spain in 2026 can pay a flat tax on income – 24%. This makes Spain, and in particular the Costa Brava, more favorable than Portugal or Italy

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Can I get a visa if I am a sole proprietor (Autónomo)? Answer: Yes, but you need to show contracts with at least one company outside Spain.

Question: Can I buy an apartment on the Costa Brava and get this visa? Answer: Buying a property is a plus for proof of residence, but the main criterion here is your remote income.
